Happy Halloween!

(Although it looks like we support the Taliban, Grant's pumpkin is disguised as a ghost due to a carving mishap...)

Hayes had his 8 month appointment this morning and all went well.

20 lbs, 27 3/4 inches long and in the 50-75th percentile for both.
Dr. Sabeti was very pleased!

We got the go-ahead to start giving him meats, starting with chicken and then maybe some veal shank... I'm not kidding... veal shank. I've never even prepared veal shank for myself, let alone my 8 month old baby! But I guess it's easy on the stomach so they recommend it as a "first meat".
Not sure if we'll be giving him veal anytime soon, but will definitely introduce some chicken and more protein. We can also start giving him yogurt and legumes so we've got a whole new set of options to play around with now! In addition to breakfast and dinner, he'll also start having lunch.

In the shot department, he got his 2nd flu shot (the first year they get flu shots, they have to get two) and a Hep B vaccine. Some tears were shed, but the nurse gave him a new toy and all was forgotten. It reminded me of when I was little and used to get those rubber finger puppet toys from the dentist.
And it also made me realize how quickly he's growing that he could be appeased by something materialistic to make him forget the pain of the doctor :(

Tonight, we have big plans for Hayes first Halloween. The giraffe and his zookeepers will be heading over to Nanna Susu's house for her annual Halloween party.  Pictures to follow tomorrow...

Happy Halloween!

Happy Friday!

We're staying local this weekend and have lots planned, including:

- Dinner date tonight at new trendy Italian resto called Merkato di Vetro...
- Shopping trip to find Hayes a winter coat for our NYE trip to Aspen
(I've got my eye on this one)...
- Annual Cohen Pumpkin Carving Contest (Hayzey's first pumpkin!!)...
- Trip to the Nursery to find some indoor and outdoor plants...
- Intense game of Scrabble (I need to sharpen my Words with Friends skills!)...
- Halloween party with H's friends from Mommy & Me...

All that, plus some lazy brunches and a bit of Niners watching on Sunday makes for a darn good sounding weekend, don't you think?

I leave you with your first Halloween greeting from our little giraffe -
hope it's a good one!

Adventures in eating (and drinking!)...

Hayes has been eating solids for quite some time now; we started with rice cereal a couple days shy of 5 months and have since tasted a plethora of veggies and fruits including
sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, butternut squash, winter squash (no clue what the difference is between the squashes!), peas, green beans, corn, rutabaga (which I had never even had until I gave it to him!) apples, bananas, mango, honeydew melon, blueberries, apricots, raspberries, peaches and pears.

I try to give him homemade food as much as possible, usually whipping up a batch on Saturday or Sunday that we'll put in the freezer and will last us for the next week or so.
Since he turned 6 months old, I've been cooking the veggies in chicken stock, then pureeing them so he gets a bit of protein (for those of you who don't remember, protein = full tummy = full night's sleep!!). It really has made all the difference.

We lucked out and Hayes has always been super into food. He LOVES fruit, especially bananas and honeydew - he'll open his mouth and flap his arms like a little bird, jumping up and down in his seat.

On Tuesday night, I made a salad with beets and had some leftover, so I decided to puree them and see if Hayes liked beets as much as I do. Back story, I don't think my parents were ever huge beet fans as I don't ever remember having them growing up. In fact, I think the first time I tasted beets, I was about 22 years old and I was annoyed at myself for never trying them before as it turned out I loved them. Well, it turns out Hayzey loves them too!

messy but delish!!
He's also been practicing with the sippy cup and is getting quite good at it!

okay mom, you ready?...

(i swear, it's just water in there!)

so serious...
In other news, Hayes' 8 months photos are up on the gallery, so enjoy!:

And so it begins...

I've been thinking about starting a blog for a long time. A long, long time...

First, I was intimated by the whole idea of a blog. How did I start one? What would I name it? Who would read it? What if nobody read it? Did I even want anyone to read it?

I got over the whole technology fear (a large feat for those who know me!) and picked a fitting name. Finally created my url (is that even what it's called?) one day while I was on maternity leave.

And then a lady and her loves... sat, untouched for almost 4 months...

I wasn't sure how to start it. How do you just go from never blogging to suddenly blogging? What exactly was I going to blog about?

And this afternoon, I'm feeling inspired and decided that today was the day I'd start. So that's that. I still haven't figured out how to make it a fancy template and I have no clue who'll read it and frankly, that doesn't really matter to me! I've always liked the idea of having a blog where family and friends can come and check in on our little family and our life in LA, and this is especially true now that our little man is growing up before our eyes.

So here you have it, folks. Come here for updates on all things G, C, H & GF, with a spattering of what I like and find interesting because, well, I'm the lady and this blog is for my loves.

Speaking of loves, Hayzey is 8 months today... can you believe it?

hayes, almost 8 months - palm springs, ca
