Holiday Recap...

Happy Monday!
Our trip up North for Thanksgiving was a great success;
Hayes was AMAZING on the way up - we timed the trip with his naps and stopped to have a long lunch at a cheese farm. The way back, not so great, but overall much better than we thought he was going to be.
It was fun to see all of the Dakes and Hayes enjoyed spending some quality time with the Greats and Grandma, Grandpa and Auntie V while Mom and Dad spent a fabulous night in the city.
We got back late Saturday evening and spent yesterday catching up around the house, visiting the Farmers Market and rekindling our love affair with the bouncer, which Hayes missed dearly. Unfortunately, Grant has come down with something (this household hasn't been 100% healthy in over a month) so the boy and I are sequestering ourselves away from him while he rests up and gets better.

Here are some shots from the weekend of the boy
and some of the San Fran sights...

Kings in the Corner with Auntie V...

We walked through Occupy SF after dinner on Friday night. It was basically a bunch of hippies who were stoned out of their minds playing bongos and stinking up the Embarcadaro. Seems what they needed most was to occupy a shower...

Farmer's Market, LA
I'm in the process of uploading Hayes' 9 month photos to the gallery but they're taking forever. Will send out a link when they're ready.

Have a great week!

A couple things to be thankful for...

Happy Thanksgiving!

We always have a lot to be thankful for, but this year, I'm feeling especially thankful for everything we've been blessed with.
Here are a couple of things I'm particularly grateful for...

- A happy and healthy baby boy who is seriously the light of my life. I can't even remember what it was like before he came around and am so unbelievably lucky that I get to spend everyday with him, watching him discover new things and grow up into the fine little man he's becoming.
I am so proud to be his mama.

- An amazing husband who works tirelessly to support our little family, who's never pulled any crap about dirty diapers or middle of the night Hayes duties (and who's getting an awful lot of experience with poo in the bathtub!). I know I don't tell him enough but I am so incredibly grateful for everything he is to us and couldn't pick a better partner to go through life with...

- A seriously awesome support system through our families. I have no idea what we would do without our weekly babysitting services from Grandma and Grandpa. I absolutely love how often Hayes is able to see his Nana and Pappa and cherish the memories we are creating through the numerous family vacays we've taken together and plan to take in the future. And whether it's hand-me-downs and advice from his Auntie Jess, weekends away vacationing in FL with his Auntie Whitney (still the longest we've been able to peel ourselves away from the little guy!) or an abundance of love and smooches from Auntie V, our families keep us going and we are so so thankful.

- The fact that Hayes has been able to meet 4 of his great grandparents. Crazy!

- An amazing nanny who keeps our house in order, our little babe smiling and mama sane.

- My job and boss. Somehow I've managed to obtain the most ideal scenario when it comes to being a working mother and not a day goes by where I'm not so appreciative of that.

Those are the biggies. A couple of simple things I'm thankful for as well?...

- Pinterest... completely obsessed!

- My iPhone. I don't know what I was doing living in the dark ages for so long. The camera alone is worth the upgrade. Definitely need to do more facetime with friends and fam in 2012.

- Snuggles from Greta Faye. She has handled all of the changes in 2011 amazingly and she will always be my #1 feline daughter.

- Red cups at Starbucks. I know they jumped the gun this year but they still make me smile...

- The navigation in my car... I am no longer afraid to drive downtown - something I've been working on for 8 years!

- Trashy television. While a serious episode of Grey's Anatomy is enjoyable once in awhile, I look forward to spending the evening with the Zoe camp, my Housewives neighbors or my gal pal Guiliana much, much more.

I could go on and on (and that's a good thing!) but to make a long story short,
I'm thankful for everything and everyone in my life and can only hope that what's in store for us in 2012 is half as good as what we lived in 2011.

Hope y'all have a good Thanksgiving!

xoxo

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

I have a tendency to take holidays that are supposed to be single day celebrations and strrrretch them out so they're multi-day, even sometimes multi-week events.
This year, we celebrated Halloween twice; Our Christmas/NYE holidays will span a 14 day period. Usually, our wedding anniversary is celebrated not just by observing the day, but with a 5 day jaunt to our favorite island in Hawaii (sadly, this year we decided it was too much to take the babe to a different timezone for a long weekend so we missed our annual trek to Kona.
We've promised ourselves that tradition will resume in 2012).
I can't even imagine what Hayzey's first birthday is going to be like...
(basically keep all of Feb 2012 open).
Call me crazy and over-the-top,
but I like to think of myself as just being quite festive!

So naturally, I've been looking forward to Thanksgiving week for quite sometime. I absolutely adore Angel's Camp, a small Goldrush town just east of Stockton where Grant's grandparents, Myrna and Olie live. GG and Great Pops (as Hayes will call them) live in an adorable house on a great green golf course. Every year on Thanksgiving, the boys go out golfing while the girls stay in and prepare the feast, chatting and playing cards to pass the day away until it's time to sit down and dig in. After we've gorged on way too much food, we'll sit down around the fire to watch some football or old home videos (there are some CLASSIC ones of Grant - "just in the nick of time!") or maybe catch a flick at the local movie theater. It's cozy and festive and I look forward to it every year :)

And who knew it was Home of the Jumping Frog?! Makes me love it even more!

This year will be especially fun as it's Hayzey's first Thanksgiving and he's finally going to meet the rest of his relatives on the Dake side of the family. The only thing I'm not so excited about is the 6+ hour drive up on Wednesday with a child who is going through a phase where he HATES the car - should be a hoot! Anyways, lots to do over the next couple of days to get ready but really excited to be there with everyone, especially since I know relatives fighting over spending time with the newest addition = a much appreciated break for Mom and Dad!

Here are a coupla shots from the weekend...

Like my new 'do?

Go Niners!

Fun with Grandpa's fedora...
Finally, I don't know what it is about this picture, but it melts.my.heart. My two boys, snuggling in bed, Hayes saying, "wake up, Daddy!" or more like, "bbbbpppttfffttt. ya ya ya ga!"

Have a great week!

Friday at last!

Not much on tap around here this weekend - it's supposed to be another rainy & cold one (since when did we move to Seattle?!) so we're probably going to be hunkered down inside for most of it.

Mostly, we'll be getting ready for our big trip up North to Angel's Camp on Wednesday to see the Dake clan for Thanksgiving. It cannot come soon enough - we're itching for some good food, lazing around, lots of Kings in the Corner and quality time with the fam. Oh and a Mom and Dad date night in SF on Friday evening - my mouth is already watering thinking of the Slanted Door deliciousness that awaits!

This morning, Hayes Traxler Cohen: SUPERSTAR! re-emerged for a professional photo shoot.
Got lots of the little man solo and a few family shots,
hopefully one of which we can use for the 'ole Cohen holiday card.

Our boy has grown up so much since our last shoot,
when he was a mere 9 days old... sigh!

You don't believe it until you live it, but it really does go by so fast!

Hope y'all have a great weekend!
xoxo

Hayes-isms...

Some facts about Hayes these days...

- He's babbling up a storm. No words yet, but lots of ya ya's and ga ga's.
When he gets frustrated and starts to lose it, he lets out a long "mummm" before the whining starts, which I know doesn't mean a damn thing, but I like to think it's him speaking to me directly.
- When he gets super excited, he kicks his legs so hard, I'm afraid they're going to fly off of his body. I read somewhere that when babies do that, it means they're saying, "Let's get physical."
The Olivia Newton John song plays though my head every time...
- Although he's not crawling yet, a few times I've checked in on him before going to bed and he's somehow gotten his body into crawling position, butt straight up in the air. It is the cutest.thing.ever.
- He loves being held upside down. He loves to be scared, like when you suddenly look at him and gasp really loudly. Or when you pretend you're going to step on him. He basically loves anything that has to do with "Danger! Danger!".
- Since he's still all gums, we're limited to the amount of finger foods we can give him, but last night I cut up some bananas into tiny pieces and he fed himself. And for the most part, he did a pretty good job of getting the pieces of banana from the tray and into his mouth....

This is what you want me to put in my mouth??

Practicing my pincer grasp...

Banana has landed... must.not.let.it.out!

But sometimes a boy can become lazy and it's just easier to cut out the hands and put the food straight into the mouth. Hey, Greta does it like that, right??

Get in my belly!

Mission accomplished.

Weekend Recap...

We're still recovering over here from the weekend's festivities (SO not able to bounce back the way we used to!), but overall, I think the birthday boy was pleased, so Operation Grant's 30th was a success!
Make a wish!
La Descarga

Grandma Nini and Grandpa Darryl were a HUGE help this weekend and assumed babysitting duties while Mom and Dad went out on the town. Grandma Nini joined us at Gymboree, then we took a trip to Toys R Us, where it seemed Christmas came a bit early for the boy :-)

Hayes checking out what Gavin has...

Taking a spin...

Even without the words, I can already hear "MINE"...

With Grant up in SF for the Niners game yesterday, the boy and I got down to work making our crafty Christmas presents. This picture pretty much captures Hayes' sentiments towards the activity...

Mom, I don't want to do this anymore!!!
Unfortunately, he didn't have a choice as he was
kind of a crucial element to the project.
He'll thank me one day!!

Have a great week!

Happy Friday!

It's a very special weekend for a very special boy... And I'm not talking about Hayes!

Tomorrow's Grant's 30th birthday, so we have lots planned to mark the occasion:

slow down, old man!
- Tonight, we're going to one of our fave Italian restaurants,
Osteria Mamma for dinner with friends, followed by drinks at a cool speakeasy-type rum bar called La Descarga.
- Tomorrow, we've got Hayzey's Gymboree class, followed by my favorite Canes game of the whole season, when we play our rivals FSU.
- Tomorrow evening, Grant and I are going on a fancy bday dinner date at a new restaurant we haven't tried yet called The Tasting Kitchen
I'm already dreaming about the Romero's Beach House.
- And on Sunday, Grant and his dad are doing some father/son bonding and flying up to the Bay to watch the Niners game, which happily excuses me from having to watch football all day long and leaves me and the boy some time to work on his Christmas gifts to everyone. I won't spoil the surprise and tell you what it is, but will say that involves lots of tiny hands :) Any guesses?

shhhh... it's a secret!

Have a great weekend!

All About Me... A to Z!

So the inspiration to start blogging came from a few different sources, one of them being Tina's sister, Liz's fantastic blog 'explore.dream.discover'. Liz is an amazingly talented photographer and currently uses her blog to showcase her travels around Europe as her and her hubby spend some time living abroad in Amsterdam.

Today's post is a stolen idea from Liz and has nothing to do with Hayes, but I'm a sucker for these things and where better to post 26 things about myself than on my very own blog, right? Enjoy!

A. Age – 30.
B. Bed size – King. When we have to sleep in Queens now in hotels and whatnot, they seem SO tiny!
C. Chore that you hate – Scooping Greta's litter - there's nothing glamorous about it. But the 'lil furball is worth it :)
D. Dogs – More of a crazy cat lady, but would be open to the idea once we're done having babies and the kids start to get on our case (many, many years from now!)
E. Essential start to your day – A snuggle from Hayes, a cup of coffee for the road and some brekkie, stat!
F. Favorite color – Green.
G. Gold or silver – Definitely gold these days, particularly anything rose gold. Kinda obsessed.
H. Height – 5’8"
I. Instruments you play – I once was forced to take the trumpet in middle school and was told that I had the lowest grade out of the entire class. I hated it. Singing (exclusively to myself or Hayes, I won't even let Grant hear my "real" voice) is about as musical as I get...
J. Job title – Account Supervisor, Lifestyle Marketing
K. Kids – HAYES, of course! And let's not forget our feline daughter, Greta Faye.
L. Live – Los Angeles, CA. Never thought we'd live here for so long but can't seem to get away!
M. Mother’s name – Beatrice Penny Lynne, goes by Penny - which is actually quite ironic that she goes by a total nickname since she hates nicknames by far more than any person I know!
N. Nicknames – C, Chanelly, Bigou - hope to include Mama someday soon :)
O. Overnight hospital stays – Just after Hayes was born...
P. Pet peeves – I'd say being late is probably my number one pet peeve.
Q. Quote from a movie – I'm awful at remembering movie quotes (probably b/c I sleep through most movies)... BUT, I can pretty much recite the entire script for Dumb & Dumber... should I be proud of that?!
R. Right or left handed – Right.
S. Siblings – Two sisters: one older, one younger. Wish more than anything that we lived closer...
T. Time it takes you to get ready – I've always been pretty speedy but have learned to be especially quick since having a baby. The minute he goes down for a nap, the clock has started!
U. Underwear – Strange question, what about it?
V. Vegetable you hate – Broccoli rabe & collard greens.
W. What makes you run late – My husband!
X. X-rays you’ve had – Think just dental x-rays... and ultrasounds are basically x-rays too, right?
Y. Yummy food you make – My own specialty is probably Turkey Chili. And I love to bake. Any excuse I have to make a yummy smelling dessert, I'm game. I can't wait til I have a full house of mouths to feed so desserts are a bit more realistic - Grant and I finishing off 3 dozen cookies is never a good thing!
Z. Zoo animal –Probably monkeys. Although we joke that Hayzey's favorite animal is a giraffe, I can't wait to see what he gravitates towards when he's old enough to appreciate the zoo!

Weekend Recap...

This weekend was one of those great weekends where time seemed to go by a little slower than usual. It's not often that you feel like you had a long weekend (aren't they never long enough??) and I don't know if it was because of Daylight Savings or what, but I feel like we had a nice, hearty weekend filled with lots of activities and time with good friends.

Hayzey started his Gymboree class on Saturday and LOVED it! And although we were a little worried at the beginning of class when the over-the-top instructor loudly exclaimed, "I assume we're all little crawlers here?!?" and we were the only ones who sheepishly replied, "Not our boy!", it really didn't end up mattering and I think it was great for Hayes to be around other kids his age. And it was nice for Grant to be able to do a class with him, as it's always been just Mom taking Hayes to Mommy & Me classes and yoga, etc...

Hayzey's first slam dunk...
We spent some time with a few of Grant's childhood friends who were in town for the weekend, going to dinner and drinks on Saturday night and hosting everyone over to watch some football on Sunday. Looks like we'll get some use out of the TV in the mancave this season, afterall!

Alamo reunion...

After a trip to the park to play on the swings (for both baby and the grown-ups...) we completed our weekend by lighting a fire in the fireplace for the first time ever (success - we didn't burn the house down!!) and enjoying some delicious homemade chicken tortilla soup.

Hope y'all have a great week!
