Swings!

I am 31 years old and I am not ashamed to admit that I love to swing. I mean, honestly, who doesn't? When was the last time you were on a swing, fully pumping away, wind blowing in your face, experiencing that exhilarating feeling in your stomach as you soared through the air? To me, it's the closest I'll ever come to flying (no skydiving for this lady, I'm nobody's fool!) and I love it.

Grant always makes fun of me for this childish guilty pleasure I partake in whenever we're both at the park with Hayes, even going so far as to secretly snap photos and try to humiliate me by posting them on facebook (no humiliation here, as I said, I'm not ashamed! EXCEPT when there's a lot of people at the park and it's not obvious that you're there with a baby... A wierdo adult swinging away solo on a busy afternoon can look a bit creepy to the outside eye...). Anyways, when we were at the park last week, I couldn't resist capturing Mr. Judgy-Judgerson as he enjoyed a little swing time himself. Check out that dismount!

Pump, pump, pump it up!
Swings are for kids? Oh, really...
Someone's had some practice with this...
I've been doing some major housekeeping this week in what little spare time I've had, finally getting around to uploading all of Hayes' 1st year videos onto his youtube channel and finishing up his baby book. Will post the link to the vids when they're ready - there are a lot of them but I'm so thankful I've captured those moments as they've happened. It's fun to look back on the different stages he's gone through and how much he's already grown!

Check out his 13 month photos here when you have a chance. Hayes' 13th month included attending his 1st birthday party for one of his best friends, Gavin; graduation from infant to toddler in Mommy & Me; a weekend getaway to Palm Springs; his first teeth (finally!!); and lots of trips to the park and Toddle Tunes.

Bad Blogger...

I've been a bad blogger lately, but I swear it's not my fault... This darn thing I call my day job has just been getting in the way of my blogging fun! I've found myself super duper busy at work lately and it leaves little time for me to update you all on life's shenanigans. Usually I can find a small chunk of time at work to put in a quick post but the days have been running away from me and by the time I get home at night, get the boy all squared away (dinner, playtime, bath, more playtime, bottle, book & bed) and collapse on the couch after G and I eat, I'm so exhausted, the last thing I feel like doing is opening up my computer!

Anyways, forgive me if my posts have become few and far between and I'll do my best to remain consistent with new information and pictures to keep you readers entertained. It's our busiest time of year at work with a bunch of events and new programs coming up, so that's been great - it just leaves a little less time for everything else!

Auntie V blew into town last weekend in a blink-and-you-might-miss-it fashion. It seriously felt like she was there for a total of 2 seconds as she arrived late Fri eve and left Sun afternoon. But Hayes enjoyed spending time with his favorite Cohen aunt (see what I did there?) and was so sad to see her go, he's been whining about it all week!
Auntie V, come back!
Here are a couple more snaps from the weekend. We went to the park on Friday afternoon and logged in some swing and sand time. Hayes is very curious about other kids and is constantly checking them out - it's the cutest! Nanna Susu has a friend who owns a daycare and we're excited to have her take Hayes there to play with the other kids and make some new friends  - and once the weather warms up, we're hoping she'll take him to the park more often. A boy's gotta play!

Hayes found this toy at the park and started playing with it and trying to fill it up with sand. He didn't quite understand how to, so he literally tried to pick up a single grain of sand and drop it in there over and over again. The cutest!
Hey guys, whatcha doin over there? Can I play?
Here are some shots from Toddle Tunes. I think we have a future drummer on our hands...

And here's a little vid of our newest game in the bath. Hilar.

That's all I have time for today - gots to get back to work - but keep your eyes out for Hayes 13 month pictures later this week (our boy is a teen! And he's certainly acting like it...)

Happy Friday!

It's been a very busy week for me, hence the lull in this 'ole blog.
I was in Nashville from Monday - Wednesday for meetings, meetings, meetings. It was a very productive couple of days with my team and clients, although I think I gained 10 lbs from the quantity of fried chicken and desserts I consumed (those Nashvillians sure know how to eat!). I returned late Wednesday eve, eager to see my boys - it took an immense amount of willpower not to wake up Hayes when I got home; instead, I crept into his room and took in a nice long stare of my peaceful babe in slumberland ;)

Hayes has definitely kept up his moodiness that he was exhibiting last weekend. I think this is just life with a toddler now - when he's unhappy, he wants you to know he's unhappy... and straight away! Overall, compared to other babies, he is still a dream, but we've been so spoiled by his easy temperament, we can't help but complain when he is anything but pleasant. I've been reading a couple of books about toddlers (are you really surprised?) and most say that a big reason why tantrums start is because of all of the big feelings they are experiencing and not knowing what to do with all of those emotions. I really think that's the case - big feelings and no real way to communicate them besides whining and crying. So we'll push through it, find our own way to communicate, and I think the most important thing is making sure Hayes knows he's heard and being there for him when he needs it. Man, do I sound like a hippy dippy parent who's fully drunk the attuned parenting kool aid?!...

Auntie V comes into town late tonight so we're looking forward to spending some time with her. Not much on tap this weekend, besides hanging out. Here are a few of our plans...

...tonight, we're going to try this new restaurant and catch a flick, Friends with Kids before heading to LAX to pick Victoria up...
...Toddle Tunes tomorrow (we've only got two classes left, then we're onto swim lessons!)...
...hoping to get a mani/pedi while there's lots of people around to watch the boy for me...
...dinner tomorrow night, most likely taking in, with the Cohens...
...Sunday lunch, maybe at Tender Greens , with Victoria and Nini while Grant has a work lunch...
...and if there's time amongst all of that, hoping to make these cookies I found on pinterest. They look to.die.for.

Hope y'all have a nice weekend. Promise to take lots of pictures to share on Monday, I know I've been a slacker! Apologies for the boring all-text nature of this post, but I'm afraid the boy is stirring and I don't have time to upload any.
Forgive me?

A mature St. Paddy's Day weekend...

Grant and I have never been too big on the St. Paddy's Day celebrations, which says a lot considering we celebrate pretty much everything. I think the main reason why is because it falls so close to my birthday so we're usually recovering from whatever shenanigans took place a few weeks before. This year was no exception... the only difference was our non-celebratory observance wasn't due to the fact that we were still nursing hangovers from a big birthday night out on the town, it was because we are old.

In lieu of the rain-or-shine pub crawl that our friends imbibed in on the westside, we stocked up on some Irish staples and cooked up a feast with our house guests. On the menu?

...Irish Vintage Cheddar and Beer Fondu (which I mentioned in Friday's post), accompanied by sourdough bread, green apples, asparagus and cauliflower...
...Guinness braised roast beef with roasted red potatoes...
...Guinness Chocolate Pudding (recipe courtesy of my sister, Jess - they take a bit of effort but are to.die.for!)

We went to bed feeling like we had gained 10 lbs but it was deeee-licious!
I think it might be a new tradition ;-)

Grant's cousin, Max and his girlfriend, DeLane were in town all weekend and although we didn't do much (we thought it was going to be torrential downpours all weekend so we didn't make any plans!), we had a great time catching up with them and Hayes enjoyed being spoiled rotten by his second cousin and Auntie DeLane. The little guy was a bit moodier than usual while our house guests were in town; I'm not sure if it's because maybe he's getting a few more chompers or maybe he's transitioning into a frustrated toddler who can't seem to express all of those emotions he's got. I'm in Nashville for work until Wednesday eve (Daddy's in charge!) so I'm hoping he figures it out by the time I get home (wishful thinking much?!).

Anyways, here are a couple shots from the weekend. I've only been gone from home for less than 24 hours and already miss my little fam terribly.

Daddy & Hayzey picking out our pie...
Hayes & his friend, Gavin at Toddle Tunes...
He takes the violin VERY seriously...
These funky drum shaker things? Not so much!
And happy 4th birthday to my darling Greta Faye, who turns 35 in cat years today. Meow!

Weekend Plans and Good Vibes...

It's going to be a gloomy and cold weekend here in LA, no fun at all, especially when you have guests in town... Grant's cousin Max and his girlfriend, DeLane are visiting and I blame them for bringing the gnarly weather that is part of the usual forecast in San Francisco ;-( Only kidding!

Because we'll be confined indoors during the day, I anticipate their being lots of basketball watching and hanging out. Tonight, we're taking them to our favorite - Son of a Gun, of course! And tomorrow, in lieu of the big St. Paddy's Day pub crawl our friends are doing on the Westside, we're going to make a traditional Irish dinner which will include this delish recipe for Irish Vintage Cheddar & Beer Fondu I recently discovered on Pinterest.

On a more serious note, my Mama underwent surgery this morning to remove her gallbladder (who needs one of those anyways?!) so please send lots of good vibes and wishes for a speedy recovery. Thinking of you and hope you're feeling back to your old self soon, Mom ;-)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hayes-isms...

The little guy is bursting with personality these days and I am loving every minute. Some of my recent faves include...

- he loves to take sips from adult cups and bottles. When he sees them, he makes an "ahhh!" sound, you know, like the sound you make when you've just had an incredibly refreshing sip of something delicious. Hayes makes this sound before the liquid has even touched his lips and after every sip he takes. Adorable!
- he likes to play this new game where he'll stand on the edge of the couch or a chair and bury his face into the pillow over and over again. I think he really thinks he's hiding when he does this. It never gets old.
- he isn't saying any real words yet, but sometimes, when Grant is in the other room, Hayes will yell out "Da-dey!" with all of his might. I like to think this is him requesting his father's attention.
- On that same note, he definitely knows who his Mama and Daddy are. The minute I walk in the door after being at work all day and am greeted with a face that legitimately lights up with delight at the sight of me is by far the best minute of the entire day.
- he knows where his head and belly are, can play peekaboo like a pro and is still fluent in Native American speak. Oh, and he also knows how to pull off his socks.
- I've said it before but those two teeth poking through those gums are the cutest teeth I have ever seen.
 - whenever we open up the mancave, Hayes goes directly to the chair in the corner where Grant keeps the football and pulls it down. I've never seen a father look at his son with more pride in his eyes...

That's Hayes at 12 1/2 months. We're anxiously awaiting his first words (any bets on what it'll be?!) and feel like walking is imminent (there hasn't been any progress since last week but he basically runs while he's cruising now so that's the logical next step!).

Weekend Recap...

We're back from the desert and the weather couldn't be more night and day to what it was this past weekend. IMHO, Daylight Savings absolutely sucks. It's dark when we wake up now and seems to stay light far too late - how can it already be bedtime for Hayes when the sun hasn't fully gone down? Maybe Arizona's onto something...

The silver lining to DST is that Hayes has been sleeping until about 8:30/9a the past 3 days, which makes getting ready in the morning a whole lot easier. Unfortunately, that means I barely get to spend any time with my little man before I'm off to work, but I guess that's the beauty of my lax work schedule - I can make up for lost time on other days of the week :)

The desert was fun, although not as relaxing as I would have hoped. Ever since I had Hayes, I've gone from somebody who could sleep through anything (I could literally fall asleep at a loud bar if I laid my head down on the table!) to somebody who I swear, hears noises before they happen. As a result, I don't have nearly as good of sleeps as before so I'm constantly tired... I think that might just be the way it is for all moms - I'm always waiting for Hayes to make a noise and when he doesn't, I worry about why it's so quiet. I can't win! Overall, it was a nice weekend though - great to spend time with friends and fun to escape the city for a mini-vacation. As you can see from the below pics, the desert looks good on Hayes (although let's be honest, what doesn't?!):

Can you say 'comfortable in the water'?...
Desert milk...
Hamming it up for the cam...
Swimming with Uncle Pat...
Brunching at the Parker... I cannot get enough of babies in adult sunnies!
Myrna and Olie were up in LA last night passing through on their way back to Angel's Camp so Hayzey got to spend some time with his greats. I absolutely love that's he's able to be so close to all of his grandparents and great grandparents - it's something I unfortunately wasn't able to experience and I think it's so important. We're looking forward to April when we get to see my parents (or Nana and Papa, as Hayes will call them) in Newport Beach for Easter and we also just booked our annual Memorial Day getaway to Scottsdale - bliss!
I still can't believe it's already mid-March - where has the time gone?!

Off to the desert!

We're off to the desert this weekend for a laid back belated birthday celebration for yours truly and to get some much needed R&R...

***
I'm planning on spending the majority of the weekend lounging poolside with a cocktail in hand, but besides that, we're planning on...

...firing up the grill for a casual bbq Friday night at the house. I can already feel the warm desert air on my skin as we dine al fresco by the pool...
...practicing walking with Hayzey. He took his first steps Wednesday night (!!) and while we have quite a ways to go and a whole lotta confidence to build in his ability to maneuver around on his hind legs, we're headed in the right direction!
...heading back to this cute seafood restaurant, Fisherman's Market & Grill for some fresh fish and cold beer. Last time we went, I was 2 1/2 months prego so I'm hoping I think it's cuter this time around!
...lots of time in the pool, getting some good use out of the little man's float...
...birthday dinner at either Morgan's in the Desert  or Adobe Grill, depending on how we're feeling Saturday night.

We haven't gone anywhere since we got back from Maui in late January, which seems like ages ago, so we're really looking forward to our quick getaway!

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

Silly Hayes...

As Hayes gets older, he's getting the hang of this opening-presents business.
Here are some shots of the boy having fun opening up his birthday present from Auntie Whitney...

He's going to be a pro by the time Christmas comes around...

Birthday Reflections and Weekend Recap...

Yesterday, I celebrated turning 29 for the 3rd time. Now in year's past, birthdays were a pretty big deal to me. As I mentioned in a post a few months ago, we take holidays pretty seriously around here so birthdays become birthmonths and so on and so forth. When Hayes was born a week shy of my 30th birthday last year, we were obviously pretty preoccupied with something else (figuring out how the hell we were going to care for this needy being they call a newborn!) so my big milestone of a birthday kind of came and went with no real hurrah.

A year has passed and I spent the majority of February planning the little man's party, only to look up last week and realize, oh yeah, I have a birthday coming up too! I didn't want to do anything wild this weekend to celebrate (we decided when we went to Hollywood for a friend's birthday a few weeks ago that we pretty much never need to go back - I saw a young lady urinating in the street - THE STREET!!!) so Grant and I had a delectable dinner at Mastros on Saturday night and plan on bringing Hayzey to Palm Springs this weekend with a couple of friends to luxuriate by the pool and enjoy this unseasonably warm March weather. We weren't even going to go out last night, but Grant's mom decided to come up last minute so we went to a casual movie and sushi (you know you're old when you go to a movie about a birthday party on your birthday. I think I spent the entire film with my mouth wide open in horror as to what was going on, thinking the whole time, I would KILL my child if they did this to my home).

Anyways, I was talking to a friend yesterday and he asked me how my day was going and what it felt like to be 31. Before I answered, he said "Is it depressing as hell?", to which, after thinking about it, I replied, "No, not at all." I am exactly where I wanted to be at 31 - a happily married, home-owning mom to a healthy little boy, with a secure job that I really do love. I don't think I would change a single thing about what's going on at this point in my life and I think that's a pretty amazing thing to be able to say. And although my birthday isn't a raging, exciting party anymore, my low-key day and night with my boys yesterday was perfect ;-)

I stumbled upon this post on a blog I read that seemed very fitting for the occasion.  I think the important thing to remember as you get older is that it's not the number you are, but the way you feel. When I was in my twenties, thirty seemed ancient, but now that I'm in my thirties, I realize it's not old at all. And as long as you're healthy and happy with where you are in your life, what does it matter how many times you have to push that up arrow on the elliptical machine?

Our weekend was a busy one, with music classes, birthday parties and graduation ceremonies galore. I am adoring watching Hayes around other kids - he is so social and inquisitive and easy-going - truly a pleasure to be around. And I thought I'd be sad to see that gummy smile disappear, but those two little white teeth that are slowly poking their way through his mouth are the cutest things I've ever seen. I'll have to try and snap a shot so I can share it with you all... Until then, enjoy some of these snaps from the weekend...

Every other baby at Toddle Tunes sits in their parents' laps and enjoys the music. Not our boy, who wants a front and center seat, right in the middle of all the action. He could care less if Grant and I are there!
Learning how to play this beast with his friend, Ollie...
Watching the bubbles...
Rooster... I think it might be time for another trim...
With Ollie at Gavin's birthday party, watching the musicians...

1 Year Check-up and Happy Friday!

We've had quite a jam packed day today, starting bright and early at 6:30a, when the boy decided he was ready to rise and shine! Those early morning wake-up calls are always fun when Grant is away (he's currently doing bad stuff with his friends at a bachelor party in Las Vegas), but I suppose they're so few and far between that we can tolerate them every once in awhile. I'm telling you, this late sleeper spoils his mom and dad ;-) And who could be annoyed when you're dealing with this:

Anyhow, we had our usual morning bottle, brekkie and household hobbies (pulling out the trash bags, going through purses, making sure Greta's food wasn't poisoned...) and after waking up early from his morning nap (the teething must be the culprit for this disinterest in sleep - yes, we FINALLY have a tooth - more on that later!), we packed up a lunch and headed to WeHo to meet up with our friends Lizzie and Ollie for lunch in the park.

It's really nice that as Hayes gets older and we don't have to worry so much about what foods not to give him, he can kind of pick off of whatever we're eating, so although I packed him up a lunch of leftover chicken curry, cottage cheese and half a banana, he ended up eating that and sharing some of my meal, which was a delicious pork belly banh mi and side pasta salad from Mendocino Farms. Fancy!

After the park, we headed to Beverly Hills for his 1 year appointment. Hayes had to get three shots - chicken pox, MMR and Hep A - and also a prick to test if he was anemic. He was SUCH a champ and cried and screamed a little, but quickly got over it. Poor little guy sat in my lap while they pricked and prodded him so I felt his body tense up with every shot :-(

The rest of the check-up was great although he was super hyper and active so it made talking to the doctor a little challenging as he wouldn't sit still. He gained a little over a pound since last time (so now he's 23 lbs 5.5 oz - 50-75%) and measured 30.25 inches (again, 50-75% - last time he was 29 inches). Developmentally, he seems spot on for where he's supposed to be. Doctor says that words should be coming soon as he's already showing that he can imitate what we say (when I was there, I was telling her about how he'd said 'Mum mum mum' - which we've since realized has nothing to do with my name, it was just a new sound he'd been working on - and he said "Mama" as if he was telling the story himself!).

And thankfully since he's FINALLY getting his first tooth - his bottom left one - she says we don't have to worry about that whole 15 month x-ray thing as he's shown that he'll grow them. So that's a relief!

We've got a mellow weekend on tap as we're still recovering from last weekend's craziness...
Our plans include:

...laying low tonight as Grant returns from Vegas and will probably be wiped.out.
...Toddle Tunes tomorrow, perhaps preceded by a yummy lunch at 800 Degrees?
...birthday dinner for moi tomorrow night at my absolute fave, Mastros. Salivating thinking about it.
...1st birthday party for Hayes' friend Gavin on Sunday. It's supposed to be 82 and sunny - gotta love LA in March!

Monday, we are headed back to Mommy & Me for Graduation with the same babies we used to meet with every week when Hayes was a wee babe. Excited to see how all the babies have grown :)

Hope y'all have a good weekend, wherever you are!
