Del Mar Bliss...

We had an AMAZING weekend getaway to Del Mar, perfect weather, great food and lots of time relaxing by the pool and enjoying each other's company. Grant and I realized that this was our first "beach" trip solo since the boy was born so we were long overdue. I really think it's so important for everyone - parents and baby - for mom and dad to escape every once in awhile to reconnect and be able to miss their kiddos. Plus, Nini and Pa could not have been happier to watch the boy for the weekend (or so they told us, at least) so it was a win for all involved!

We drove down to Del Mar first thing Saturday morning so we could enjoy the day there. It's a quick couple hour drive door to door from the Kibbutz to our hotel, L'Auberge Del Mar, so we were able to get there right before lunchtime and take advantage of early check-in. The hotel upgraded us to an adorable room on the top floor, with access to a sprawling roof deck that we shared with the rooms on either side. We never saw another soul up there throughout the whole weekend and as you can see, it didn't take long for the huz to slip into vacation mode ;-)

After a quick bite across the street at Pacifica Breeze Cafe, we set up shop at the pool for the rest of the afternoon, only moving when Grant wanted to check the score on the basketball game or to order some refreshing lemon sorbet as a mid-afternoon treat. We hit the gym for a light workout, then showered up and headed over to Poseidon for a sunset cocktail (raspberry mojito for moi, dark & stormy for Grant) and coconut shrimp app. Then, we walked up the hill to Sbicca, a locals restaurant that was recommended to us and that couldn't have been more convenient to our hotel, which was right across the street. The mains weren't anything to write home about, but we shared a crab cake appetizer that might have been the best we've ever had - perfectly seared on the outside so every bite had a crispness to it, accompanied by lemony chunks of crabmeat. Dessert was a chocolate chip bread pudding, which you obviously can't go wrong with! We were back at the hotel and sleeping by 10:30 - my kind of vacation! (I know, I've gotten old!).

Saturday morning, we woke up early and after a pit stop at Starbucks across the street, we headed to the Torrey Pines State Reserve to go on a hike. We figured we'd kind of wing it once we got there and we certainly had lots of options. There were tons of trails that led to scenic outlooks over the Pacific and lots of friendly people who were quite willing to snap our photo when asked. This was one of the cleanest hikes we'd ever been on - I don't think we saw a single piece of garbage along the way - and we finished it off by walking back along the beach. I think we did about 3 miles total and as you can see from the pictures below, it was beautiful.

After chowing down on some sandos from Board & Brew, we resumed our positions at the pool and spent a leisurely afternoon reading and playing cards. We wanted to make sure we carved some time out in our trip to visit The Brigantine as we had been told they had the best fish tacos in San Diego, so we headed over there for happy hour. The tacos were delish - crisp beer-battered whitefish on a warm corn tortilla, with sauce-soaked cabbage and a side of coleslaw and homemade potato chips. Washed down with a couple of cold brewskies and they definitely hit the spot!

We headed back to the hotel to clean up, then drove on over to Encinitas to go to Solace & the Moonlight Lounge for dinner. Another tasty meal (especially their cheddar & chive biscuits and ginormous piece of coconut cake for dessert!) and all we had the energy for after that was to roll ourselves home to bed.

On Sunday, we hit Starbucks and the gym and after pit-stopping in Northern San Diego to have lunch with Grant's grandmother, Shif, we headed to Laguna to meet up with Nini, Pa and the boy and to celebrate Pa's birthday. We gorged on BBQ at Bad to the Bone and then headed back up to LA and back to reality.
Kisses for the birthday boy...
We absolutely loved Del Mar and will definitely go back. It was the perfect weekend getaway that felt like a nice long vacation - especially since I think we really lucked out with the gorgeous weather we had.

Hope y'all had a good weekend yourselves!
